The Netherlands is a key logistics hub in Europe, with a dense motorway network and major transport corridors connecting Germany, Belgium and other neighbouring countries. Unlike some other EU countries, the Netherlands does not impose a general truck driving ban on weekends or public holidays.

However, specific restrictions apply, particularly to special and exceptional transports, during rush hours, weekends and adverse weather conditions.

Restrictions for special and exceptional transport

The following driving bans apply to special or exceptional transports (e.g. oversized or heavy vehicles):

Rush hour restrictions

  • Morning rush hour:
    07:00 – 10:00
(from 06:00 in the western part of the Netherlands)
  • Evening rush hour:
    16:00 – 18:00
(until 20:00 in the western part of the Netherlands)

Weekend restrictions

  • Saturday 09:00 until Sunday 24:00 (midnight)
Exceptions may apply, depending on the permit conditions.

Weather-related bans

Additional driving bans apply from Saturday 09:00 until Sunday 24:00 if:

  • Roads are icy or slippery, or
  • Visibility is below 200 metres due to fog or other weather conditions.

  • Longer than 22 metres
  • Wider than 3 metres
  • Heavier than 60 tonnes (60,000 kg)
  • Equipped with more than five axles

These vehicles are classified as exceptional or special transport and are not allowed to operate during the restricted time windows listed above, unless an exemption explicitly allows it.
